MATHS

01/06/2020 Week 7

MATHS TASKS  - Ideas and resources

Monday

General skills practice: Start by playing this game and look specifically at numbers bonds to 10 and 20.  Explain that it is very useful to know and use your number bonds when working out addition and subtraction calculations. Once they have completed the game, ask them to complete the number Star number bonds to 10 and Number bonds to 20 Robot sheets.

Next get your child to have a go at this online game for subtraction facts up to 20, and ask them to choose the correct numbers from the list and drag them into the gaps, while keeping in mind their number bonds to 10 and 20.

Resources:

  • Star number bonds to 10
  • Number bonds to 20 Robots

Focused tasks:

BBC Bitesize Lesson Focus: Day 1: Measuring mass

or

Hamilton Trust Year 1 Maths Week 7 Day 1: Adding Money

Tuesday

General skills practice: Recap the work on number bonds and use the Ultimate subtraction within 20 time challenge worksheet. Use a timer and see how many you can complete in 5 minutes.

Next give your child a number between 1 and 30 or 1 and 50 and ask them to list how many ways they could make the number using subtraction. E.g. 50 – 10 = 40, 50 – 20 = 30. To start with you could begin by showing them how to focus on the ‘significant numbers’, as well as their knowledge of number bonds. E.g. 1 + 4 = 5 so 10 + 40 = 50 or 50 – 10 = 40.

Focused tasks:

BBC Bitesize Lesson Focus:  Day 2: Comparing volume and capacity

Or

Wednesday

General skills practiceAsk your child to write a subtraction number bond to or within 10 e.g. 9 - 4 = 5 or 7 - 2 = 5. Remind them that numbers bonds don’t always have to equal 10. Demonstrate this by using 9 blocks of Lego (or other small items) and finding different ways to break it up. E.g. 4 + 5 / 3 + 6 etc. Write down the corresponding number sentence for their number bonds E.g. 4 + 5 = 9, and invert these to find the subtraction, and remind them to always start with the biggest number, E.g. 9 – 4 = 5.

By focusing once again on the ‘significant numbers’, can they use these facts to find out the subtraction facts up to 100? E.g. 9 – 4 = 5 so 90 - 40 = 50 or  7 – 2 = 5 so 70 - 20 = 50.

Give them the Rainbow to 100 number activity sheet and ask them to work out 10 different number bonds within 10 and the inverse subtraction.

Focused tasks:

BBC Bitesize Lesson Focus:  Day 3: Measuring capacity and volume

or

Hamilton Trust Year 1 Maths Week 7 Day 3: Finding change

Thursday

General skills practice: Look again at flags from around the world or you can find them in books such as an atlas. Ask your child to list any 2-D shapes they can see and name the properties of the shapes they find; discuss how many sides or corners it has; does it have some shorter and some longer sides or are they all the same/equal length? Does it have straight sides or curved sides? Discuss with your child how many lines of symmetry the flag has. If not, why not?

Look at the 2D shape PowerPoint, and guess the name of each shape by looking at the three clues one by one. Finally, complete the sheet and name the 2D shapes as well as identify how many sides they have.

Resources:

  • 2D Shape Properties PowerPoint
  • Name the 2D shapes

Focused tasks:

BBC Bitesize Lesson Focus: Day 4: Solve problems involving mass and capacity

or

Hamilton Trust Year 1 Maths Week 7 Day 4: 2-D shape

Friday

General skills practice: Encourage your child to practise different ways to subtract by playing this game. They need to complete the calculations by selecting the correct numbers from the grid. Ask them to start with numbers to 10 at first, and gradually build up their confidence by completing numbers to 20 and beyond. They must remember to use their knowledge of number bonds to complete each calculation. Good luck!

Lastly, complete the worksheet below looking at addition and subtraction. Pay particular attention to the inverse operations, and remember to use your knowledge of number bonds! You can use the number line at the bottom of the page to help you.
