Phase 5b

 

We are continuing to revisit Phase 5b -  practicing the alternative pronunciations of graphemes and identifying words that are real or not real when reading.

MONDAY      

Review the sounds learnt so far and play Flashcards: Speed Trial and Flashcards: Time Challenge.

 Practise the alternative pronunciation of grapheme ‘a’.

Write the grapheme ‘a’ together.  Review the alternative pronunciations and write the words: hat, splash, band, laptop, grand, bacon, apron, angel, apricot, bagel, fast, bath, grass, after, path, was, what, squad, want, wander.  

Challenge your child to cut out and sort the words in the sorting game into two lists by the way it is pronounced.   Play:  Acorn Adventures

 

Read the following sentences:

Will you wear a hat when you eat a bacon sandwich in the bath? 

Can you watch a wasp sting a lady or will it be too fast? 

Would an angel want to visit a bank in the afternoon?

TUESDAY

Review the sounds learnt so far and play Flashcards: Speed Trial and Flashcards: Time Challenge.

 

Practise the alternative pronunciation of grapheme ‘y’.

Write the grapheme ‘y’ together and write the words: yes, yell, yawn, yellow, yet, by, why, dry, reply, sky, gym, crystal, pyramid, myth, happy, funny, hairy, smelly, crunchy.  

Challenge your child to sort words into lists by the way the ‘y’ grapheme is pronounced.  Play:  Cheeky Chimps

 

Read the following sentences:

Is the gym a happy place to be? 

If you spy a mummy in Egypt , will it be dry, smelly and yellow? 

Can a mystery story be funny?

WEDNESDAY          

Review tricky words for spelling from last week: water, where, who, again, thought, through, work, mouse. 

 

Practise reading and spelling the new tricky wordsmany, laughed, because, different, any, eyes, friends, once, please.

Play Train Your Brain Phase 5 and Tricky Word Trucks.

 

Read the following sentences

Many of my friends laughed because I wore two different shoes. 

I opened my eyes, laughed once and said please. 

I didn’t want any tea because I ate too many sweets.

THURSDAY

 Practise the alternative pronunciation of grapheme ‘ch’

Write the grapheme ‘ch’ together and write the words church, chick, crunch, pinch, chirping, school, chemist, chord, chorus, technical, chef, chalet, brochure, machine. Challenge your child to sort words into lists by the way the ‘ch’ grapheme is pronounced.

Read the following sentences 

Will the chef cook chicken for school dinner? 

Can a chuckling chicken sing in a chorus? 

Will a chemist use a machine to check chemicals?

FRIDAY         

Review the sounds learnt so far and play Flashcards: Speed Trial and Flashcards: Time Challenge.

 Practise the alternative pronunciation of grapheme ‘ou’

Write the grapheme ‘ou’ together and write the words loud, proud, sound, round, mountain, you, soup, group, could, would, should, mould, shoulder, boulder.  Challenge your child to sort words into lists by the way the ‘ou’ grapheme is pronounced or use a dice with the ou roll and read mat.

Read the following sentences:

Could you carry a boulder on your shoulder? 

Would you eat soup with a trout? 

Should you shout about a mouldy group of boulders that you have found?
